I have veteran license plates and American Legion frames (with flag elements) that I specifically placed on my vehicle to reclaim the flag after J6.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep the symbols on my vehicle because of the association with MAGA and the assumptions people make.
But, I refuse to let MAGA win the narrative of what the flag truly means.

you know it's interesting; we went through the exact same thing here in Canada after the trucker protests from a few years back, where it felt like our flag was co opted by ignorant malcontents, with many lamenting the loss of pride in it as a direct result. Ironically, it was the USA threatening the sovereignty of Canada that made everyone proud again to fly it. So thanks, I guess.

They already did it to the Gadsden flag. Don't get me wrong I love the memes that poke fun of it. However, it's like the right lost the entire plot of "dont tread on me" part, it's supposed to mean "if I want to be gay or identify as a gender other than my assigned gender at birth then I should be able to." I've always felt that the Gadsden should be flown next to the LGBTQIA + flag. I'll get downvoted for this, but idc.

I swear the only houses that decorated for the 250th 4th of July were the same houses with trump signs. They are the only Americans that arenāt completely embarrassed by our country right now. This happened in Canada with the convoy. Essentially the Maple MAGA co-opted the Canadian flag for their anti-vaccine, right wing movement.
Ironically, MAGA and, more specifically Trumpās 51st state comments and action have allowed Canadians to retake the flag from the Maple MAGA.

Well the swastika isn't even exclusively german to begin with, and unfortunately your average person is driven by their emotions and has a very limited understanding of history.
Basically people are stupid, short sighted and mainly let their emotions lead them around like a puppy dog. This isn't exclusive to the maga crowd by the way, folks need to remember that and be careful they don't join those who have basically turned themselves into what they hate already while flying a different banner and claiming moral superiority.

I'm currently embarrassed to be an American. I think anyone who's even a little honest can relate to that. We have allowed corruption and wealth to hijack our entire political system to the point where there is ZERO accountability for any of our leaders. Trump just tramples and threatens everyone in HIS way, but says it's in America's best interest. Everyone sees the truth. It's a farce. And the American flag currently represents all of that farce.

Itās a shame, because I proudly fly 2 flags on either side of my garage, and I in no way support MAGA or Trump. I just recently had this same conversation with my 2 kids, that most people driving by would assume the opposite. Itās not going to stop me though. There was a time where that flag stood for something better, and Iām hoping we will get back to that at some point.

There was a time in the US when everyone could be a a proud American. No matter what country you came from, or your grandparents, or great grandparents, came from. If you were born in the US, or took a pledge to be a proud American, you were American. That one little bit of history aside, when 1/2-ish of the US broke away to try to make sure not everyone was equal, this pride in everyone being an American was a unifying thing.
Since that time, one party has worked very hard to limit what it means to be an American AND redefine WHO can be an American. If you donāt conform, or if you donāt toe the line, your citizenship could be revoked.
The other party is trying to return to what the US once was: we can all be Americans, respectful of each other including our differences.

I have a flag pole in my front yard that has the flag for the very opposite of what OP is associating the flag with. I look at that flag flying as a way of saying theyāre not taking it.
I thought about switching it to a 13 colony flag, but Iām not living in one of the 13 colonies. Then it just became a wasteful exercise in overthinking.
Thatās why unless the person is flying some other stupid flag (shout out r/vexillology ) then itās silly to presume.
Iām sticking with it though. MAGA are some of the most unamerican pieces of shit weāve had the misfortune of interacting with, and Iām looking forward to the day that these assholes are held accountable.

Eh, I attached an American flag to the back of my e-bike. It does an excellent job of keeping the rednecks in lifted trucks from zooming around me and blasting their horns. So far it's doing a great job!
Heck, it fell off one time when I forgot to tighten it, and the truck behind me stopped in the middle of the road and waited for me to retrieve it. Dude was literally blocking traffic so I could get my flag back safely.

I'm a VET and proudly fly my flag and I am 100% NOT a Trumper. If any neighbor feels like I am, the that's on them. Flying the stars and stripes has Zero to do with whom you support in office, but rather a reminder of what we are capable of as a collective.

I've got a massive vintage American Flag hanging in my loft apartment, I have really high ceilings and this massive wall over my TV and I'd seen a vintage USA flag hanging at a hotel I really like and thought I'd just recreate that..
A few years later Im at a cocktail party my building was throwing and someone heard me talking and admitted that they thought I was MAGA because of the flag but when they heard me having a conversation about politics and they were confused. Now Im pretty sure several of the awkward conversations I've had with people in my building is because they think Im a Trumper.

Honestly, that's disrespectful to the performance, talent, skills, and hard work required to be a circus clown. They are professionals who have worked hard to master their craft.
He is actively tearing down our democracy and has no respect for anyone or skills to speak of. I can only hope that we can repair the damage he has done to us on the world stage and on the home front. And to me, it's so depressing you can't help but laugh about it.

I think some of them are aware that other countries don't like or respect us but the way they view it is "were better than them anyway, so their opinion doesn't matter because we're winners and they are losers".

It's because if you take national symbols as your symbols then you can say anyone who doesn't support you doesn't support the nation. Same thing with religion to an extent. Religion claims to be the source of morality, so if you don't have religion you don't have morals, then politicians claim religion, so if you don't support those politicians, you don't support religion, which means you don't have morals.

I remember visiting Washington DC in 1993 and visiting every single historical sight and important building and monument. I came away feeling proud of the United States and interested in history and politics. Now I feel like the whole thing is just a waste and we should call the whole thing a failure.

Ya I do what I can. My business, I fly a few flags, so I hope people can figure out Iām not maga if I have a US flag, Pride flag, Hell I live near the border and run a Canadian flag too.
Iām not giving that shit away. Im not going to feel shame for something I have no influence over, if I did I would have stayed Catholic.

It sadly predates trump by a lot. As a liberal 90s teen, an American flag on your car was already a giant red flag. Pretty much as soon as conservatives got tired of screaming at hippies for disrespecting the flag by using it for clothing, blankets, stickers, etc back in the 60s, they turned around and adopted all those misuses of the flag themselves.

That's how it is in most of the world, even in some very patriotic countries. People have flags up for some national holidays but if you're rocking flag every day you'll be considered weird.
