I want to side with OP, but seeing it makes me like it. Shoulda left the pic out for more support š
Yeah, same. I was ready to dislike it, but it's such an efficient use of space and it looks good! Sorry, OP, but your gf has great ideas.
Great minds think alike. I think you should take his girlfriend to teach him a lesson.
Take her to like, a school? Can the boyfriend even enroll? The two of them will have to make a lesson plan⦠sounds exhausting
It also has the added bonus that when you open it, there's a chance that the loaf of bread might limply flop out like a dead body.
Yeah, this is a good idea. OPs girlfriend probably finds it mildly infuriating that they can't think outside the (bread) box.
I thought the same, and then I saw, and thought oh... That's genius.
Right?!
I literally have a breadbox like this somewhere in my basement, that I put up, because it took too much space up on the counter. I'm so going to use it when I find it, but I think in my craft room! It makes so much sense vertical!
Yeah I am kinda jealous I didnāt think of this. I donāt have a bread box but now I want one
Itās so much more than a bread box now
That's what I was thinking. If I turned it vertically, I could stick booze bottles in it.
I originally thought we were discussing the booze bottle
A bread bar.
it's a toilet roll holder too š³
Lolol. I haven't seen this one before
Same. I'm definitely yoinking that one.
I actually dont hate this. It occupies a corner that would otherwise be empty or cluttered. It looks nice. And bread doesnt care if its on its side or upright.
Was about to say I kinda fuck with it being vertical lol
Ya, I think the whole point the woman is going for is to cover the bread so the counter looks clean. She just wants to save some space.
Also takes up less counter space.
Hilarious that everyone's agreeing with OPs girlfriend and OP is just like "no. You don't understand. It isn't functional. The bread flops. THE BREAD FLOPS!"
My bread flops on even horizontal soā¦
Honestly, I kinda like it
Looks like it would save space. Makes sense to me
Honestly I'm more intrigued by the little toilet paper sized roll of paper towels
A breadbox turned sideways becomes a whiskey cabinet
Whiskey is bread. From a certain point of view.
Somehow⦠I donāt hate it. Makes sense. Looks good. Huh.
I've never thought of this before. This is fricking genius omg. I love this. I'm gonna buy a bread box specifically to do this. I never had one cuz they take up too much counter space. But this takes less room and provides space at the top for items!
Itās def a good idea. This post kinda has everyone siding with his girl lmao
It won't close or open properly because the door uses a counterweight + gravity. There's usually a filter up top that prevents moisture from collecting, now that's on the side. That specific breadbox also has a space already built on top for stuff. Maybe just look for vertical or corner breadboxes instead of turning one sideways?
This specific style looks just like those trendy cabinets people are getting. Let us struggle to close a bread box for 5 seconds for fashion
I like this idea, it saves counter space and fits nicely under that shelf. And why not store bread vertically?
Yes. Its not upside down.
Honestly, I think thatās pretty clever. Smaller footprint and acts as an additional cabinet.
Your gf is a genius and imma follow her example.
Why does your whiskey look likes it's in time out?
Never thought of that but it's a nice use of space! Tell her she's terrific.
I want to agree with you, but think your girlfriend figured out a secret hack.
My wife doesnāt cook, I do. She insists itās up to her how the kitchen is arranged. You canāt win this war.
Oh I'm in cold war with my wife on dishes and utensils and such. I will persevere!
This sounds like ineffective communication. Advocate for yourself man.
Certain things just arenāt worth bringing up. Like is she happy how the kitchen is organized? Yah? Does it bother you itās set up her way? No? Let it go.
Yeah I never understood this, my wife and I figure everything out together and all is taken into consideration
That requires two cooperating individuals. Alas, there are many individuals that seek control over cooperation.
I don't see a problem. I see a solution to a lack of counter space. Go tell her she's right.
I think she might be a visionary. Now that Iāve seen it I think it looks excellent like that. Kind of makes sense to have a loaf sitting up right as well. Makes it easier to remove a slice. You can even use one side as a little shelf because itās at the top.
Save alot of space
I simultaneously hate this and think it is brilliant
Iām just here to say it takes up way less space this way
itās way better this way. OP out here infuriated while 90% of the post agrees with the GF
I just flipped my breadbox on its side; so much better.
And why is that a problem? Takes up less room in that space, and works just as fine as if she had it more horizontally.
Well considering itās posted in this sub it probably isnāt a problem at all. Just mildly infuriating.
Bread blocks the door, and when you actually manage to open it it just flops out entirely
when you actually manage to open it it just flops out entirely
I've got a broken zipper like this.
even with a broken zipper I don't think mine reaches out. maybe it pokes its head out a tiny bit when it's warmer and the wind blows the right way
if youre opening it dont you want the bread out anyway
Heās intimidated by the way the bread loaf flops out like a big dong.
https://giphy.com/gifs/sQbzuG05w41S6flQOm
the gf probably
This is such a girlfriend response. āIsnāt that what you wanted, babe?ā Lol
Then putting the bread back in is annoying for no reasonā¦
Add a hook at the top in the inside and hang the bread bag from it
OP has a name like that and his bread just FLOPS OUT.
Girlfriend has entered the chat.
I've tried this and gravity can help smash the bread into misshapen pieces that make for a deformed sandwich.
Honestly, looking at it, she may be correct. Seems more ergonomic.
It looks perfect in the pic. lol. Team gf!
Please excuse me while I run to the kitchen. I just realized my bread box is not in its proper, elite position. Marry this one, guy.
You donāt like vertical bread? Itās far superior to horizontal bread
It keeps the slices flat.
Honestly an excellent idea
What's more mildly infuriating to you? Your breadbox being like this, or your post leading to a increase in the number of people who do this? Cause I'm feeling inspired
I'm with your girlfriend. It looks cute
Bread sauna
I would even dare to say, award her life hack award of the year. I am genuinely mind blown. I would never have though of that.
It looks like a little mini pantry
It looks more functional with the little shelf on top now instead of a rolling door that you can't stack anything on
Actually that's genius.
Out of curiosity OP, why is that a bad thing? You didn't say exactly why this is mildly infuriating to you, so please reply to let us know.
That placement appears to use the available space much more efficiently, including being able to put other items on the top end. Is it bad to store bread vertically, instead of horizontally? That's a real question, because I don't know.
Bread does not like to stand tall like a pillar, it likes to lay flat like a cat. Plus, have you ever tried to stack more than one loaf of bread end to end?
Exactly my thought, if the counter is small, it's actually a good way to save space, although the bread won't be in its best shape, but it'll do the job.
i mean what's the problem? that's more space efficient. and if your bread can't take the weight of being upright, that's shitty bread lol
Why do we even need the bread box here? At all. I've gotten by my whole life without one. Many dont even use these. Counter bread. Fridge bread. Drawer bead. Do you really need breadbox bread?
Edit: Pantry bread too. Because, bad kitties.
I have pantry bread. Because counter bread = cat bread. Because theyāre rude. lol
My aunt had microwave bread because of a chonky lab
I dont have a pantry but I do have dogs that have, in the past, stolen whole loaves of bread from the counter. I don't always have room in the fridge or freezer, so bread and tortillas go in a bread box. One nice thing about the bread box is that you can have stuff on top of it, which you can't do with bread.
I actually like OP's girlfriend's solution because it looks like having it sideways may actually give it more flat surface to use on top.
Bread boxes are nice when you bake your own bread to put whole loafs. Like you kinda "cure" the loaf and after a day it feels more like store bought sandwich bread.
I wouldnt put something in there I wanted to stay crusty. Also. Its nice for when you slice two pieces off a loaf. The other bread in there keeps the sliced end from being overly dried out. Because its sorta like a humidor but for loafs of bread :)
Because little door
When exposed to light, bread develops mold quicker. Keeping it in a dark and dry place preserves it longest
No. The opposite. Dark and stagnant air produce mold. We have a breathable basket on the counter. Time is the other factor but the kids devour bread like Tasmanian Devils.
When exposed to light the bread has flashbacks of better days sitting out in the sun.
if you have no counter space this is kinda smart lol
That's lowkey fucking genius and your Mrs has changed my life. Literally just did it and love it.
Makes sense to me, takes up less counter space And you get a little extra shelf on top.
Seriously, if i ever start using a bread box, i'm doing this
Sheās a genius
More mildly infuriating that I never thought to do this.
How does it feel, knowing youāre dating a genius?
I don't see a problem.
Huh Iāve never seen that but Iām strangely down for that set up. Does its function and way less counter space being used.
Your gf is a genius OP
I think itās cruel to make the bread stand up all itās life until itās eaten.
Iām not sure sheās wrong.
This is actually quite sensible. It minimises the amount of worktop space used.
Wait actually I like that, ur gf is onto something.
The Bread Box takes up less space and adds an additional Shelf when it's on end. Clever!
Never seen that, but I have to say, looks kinda nice and takes less space...
Everything about this looks more efficient; even down to you being able to stand things ontop of it now
I like it sideways itās like a little phone booth for the bread.
This is super smart IMO - especially if counter surface is limited!
That is actually a good idea, marry her
Breadbox on the end makes good sense for: 1) space saving, and 2) keeping the bread fresher - if it's not pre-sliced bread it will keep better if you put the sliced end down and only crust exposed, maybe true even if pre-sliced.
I think your GF is marriage material, you should go ring shoppng this afternoon.
The random toilet paper roll in the kitchen makes me feel better about our many random toilet paper rolls around the house. Who can afford actual Kleenex these days?
I like it, takes up less space.
I like it
I really like this ideaā¦!
Considering that corner..... she is correct.
I mean.. it seems to be a better use of space tbh
I actually think that's kind of genius. Takes up less useful space and you even have a little "shelf" on top that you don't have if it lies flat.
I donāt eat bread fast enough to justify a bread box, but I think your girlfriend is onto something here. You might as well leave her if this is mildly infuriating to you.
Wouldn't not eating bread fast enough be the justification for a bread box
I did not realize breadboxes were still a thing.
Using toilet roll instead of kitchen roll is more infuriating
Maybe you have limited counter space? If I needed to do all that though, I would get rid of the whole thing. My problem isnt the upright position, my problem would be that it won't close all the way. However, I can't stand open tabs on my phone either, this could just be a me problemš¤£š¤£
i dint knew people had such strong opinions about breadbox
It looks kind of cool on its side. plus you get little bonus shelf lol
she's onto something
Now itās a bread closet.
I thought it was a cupboard in a caravan. It looks annoyingly good. I think itās annoyingly interesting.
Actually kinda genius tbh
As others stated it does take up less space, but if youāre storing a delicate, sliced bread inside like a milk bread or a sliced brioche, storing it vertically will easily collapse the soft interior of the bread and result in more compact slices. Thereās a reason stores stock most breads horizontally.
More usable space. And probably because itās one of the most useless things in your kitchen. At least sheās making the best out of it.
Because it saves space
It's better. Takes up less counter space.
You know what... I don't hate this
The thing that's mildly infuriating is your inability to adapt and embrace this monumental breakthrough in bread storage habits.
People still have bread boxes??
Genius idea, Iām stealing that. Gives you much more counter space and little shelf - bravo girlfriend.
You could store that whiskey in there.
Why let this infuriate you?
Sheās a genius.
It is objectively a better use of space, especially since you can put stuff on top too. Taking the pic in portrait also seems to be hiding how much you need the counter space.
This actually seems smart.
Iāve just copied this with my own bread bin. Thanks OPās girlfriend!
Fits better, more counter space, maybe wake up and join her in the sun
Counter space, if it works let it be. A small thing to make someone happy.
Gf is a free thinker. I like her
Ok. And? If you have limited counter space, and yet insist on a breadbox, this is a logical space saving move that doesn't harm anything and clearly still functions as intended. If this irritates you, get help.
Ya this is dope. Your girlfriend should insist on a new bf that supports her.
What does a bread box do? I just keep my bread in the freezer or on a shelf in my pantry.
So like what's the problem I looks like it's saving space
The_Windermere 4.3k points * (edited 5h ago) (4 children)
It does take a lot less place, granted I have never owned a bread box, so I can't relate to the mild struggles.
capn_starsky 1.2k points (7 children)
Do you just huck them all on the counter that you store your junk mail on like me?
The_Windermere 1.2k points (5 children)
The bread relocates in the kitchen to where it was last needed.
Cosmo_Cloudy 191 points
My junk mail is indeed on my kitchen counter next to the bread tho š
AbeFromanSassageKing 59 points (1 child)
That's why we call every loaf of bread we buy "Wonder Bread," because we're always wondering where the hell the kids left it after taking some slices.
hud_dev 9 points
AirTags in between the slices, itās the only way
gbot1234 22 points (1 child)
The dough relocates from where it was last kneaded.
Redwuff 44 points (1 child)
This is the way.
krs9437 199 points (4 children)
I keep mine in a cupboard because otherwise my cat will eat it
TehTugboat 102 points (4 children)
I have a breadbox like this one, except the handle is a little apple shaped knob. My cat figured out it can open the breadbox and ate an entire loaf of bread one time. I was pissed. Howād they figure that shit out?

You'd be surprised...
Deltethnia 16 points (1 child)
Some cats are like little velociraptors in that regard. Clever girls (or boys). Mine is currently working on how to open a round door knob. If they were levered knobs she'd be opening them already.
krs9437 8 points (1 child)
I was thinking maybe I should get a breadbox as a better hiding spot, but after hearing that Iāll stick with the cupboard since she hasnāt tried to break in there yet lol
Glittering-Swing-261 7 points (1 child)
It probably won't take long. We just had to buy child safety locks for our cabinet under the kitchen sink after our little punk figured out how to open it.
mimipickmi 7 points
I got child safety locks for one of my cabinets, the kind that looks like a latch and you press a button to release it. He just tore the whole thing off. Apparently my cat is stronger than a 3 year old.
CaptainMalForever 15 points
Same here. Silly cats, don't you know that you aren't supposed to like grains?
_freshgreens420 10 points (1 child)
My cat knows how to open the cabinets...
G_Art33 97 points (1 child)
I just keep it in the refrigerator or freezer. Donāt use it fast enough and it gets mold on it. I hate wasting food but idk anywhere I can get like 6 slices of bread. So I usually take half out it in the fridge and freeze the rest
Green-Bus9960 8 points
I have a space on the counter that is my ācarb cornerā. Itās got my bread, chips and anything we pick up like muffins or croissants.
Iāve never used a bread box⦠I live with people who if they donāt see it, it doesnāt exists. š.
zkareface 42 points (1 child)
I just keep my bread in the freezer.Ā
BravesCPA 57 points (2 children)
In the fridge
mutantmonkey14 23 points (2 children)
It's supposed to go stale faster in fridge, but it does slow mold. Guess it depends on your environment and priorities ...or maybe big bread conspiracy!
spacegirl3 22 points (1 child)
Mine doesn't go stale at all, and I live alone and can sometimes take a couple weeks to go through a loaf. The coldness makes it a little firmer straight out of the fridge, but it softens back up by the time I'm actually eating the sandwich.
katwagrob 6 points
Yes, that's what we do.
Suicidalsidekick 17 points
We didnāt either. Then my cat discovered the joy of chewing through bags of bread and nibbling the bread.
