And Elon didn't invent that šŸ’©

Okrumbles 355 points (6 children)

I'm gonna be real I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a car that can jump in the current American driving climate anyways.

AnybodyWannaPeanus 175 points (7 children)

There is zero chance that ā€œfeatureā€ will ever see public roads. The amount of compressed are needed for that would probably vaporize everyone within 50 feet in a minor accident.

I would actually be more comfortable if it did use propellant.

This was a publicity stunt and the only to only noteworthy thing is the vacuum downforce which also seems dumb when you consider it’ll be sucking up squirrels and random shit on public roads.

It’ll be a regular car with regular features. This stuff will be ā€œ2 years outā€ for the next 20z

beardeddragon0113 84 points (4 children)

"You know how our electric cars have giant batteries that sometimes burst into an unquenchable fireball that burns hot enough to melt metal? What if we add a bunch of highly compressed gas in cannisters around the frame!"

LurkerFromTheVoid • points

Also, can 1-3 seconds in the air even be considered as "Flying" vs other machines?

For example:

The Kiity Hawk vs Tesla Roadster, what flyes more?

Kitty Hawk wins by a wide margin in actual sustained atmospheric flight—whether comparing the 1903 Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk or the modern Kitty Hawk eVTOL aircraft against the newly demonstrated Tesla Roadster.

The only scenario where a Tesla Roadster "flies" farther is if you count Starman’s 2008 Roadster launched atop a Falcon Heavy in 2018, which is in a ballistic heliocentric orbit rather than achieving self-powered aerodynamic flight...so not exactly flying, more like falling forever.

Fragrant_Major_9553 19 points

It was a concept car, and idiots are just lapping up the bullshit. Every single generation of Corvette from the C3 to the C7 had a concept car alongside it that was mid-rear.

This is nothing more than a thought experiment, and will never see the roads.

Tesla is the "Free beer tomorrow!" of automotive companies.

Nyysjan 13 points

We've had rocket packs since the 60s.
The one used in that James Bond film? Not a special effect, actual thing.
Nobody uses them for a reason.
Same for this car.

fat_fingerz 25 points (2 children)

There isn't a zero chance, Elon was proud to admit how he was able to get road safety measures cut so that the cybertruck could get onto American streets, pretty much nowhere else, and with the current US we've got the cyberpunk without the cool robots and implants.

themostrealandtrue 18 points (1 child)

Road safety measures aren't what will stop this thing from going to market. Literally no insurance company in the country will insure this this, and that's what will stop this from going to market.

AnybodyWannaPeanus 17 points (1 child)

Cars that can jump traffic like that could never be safe enough to do that on a public road. They don’t even have FSD down. So regulators will either say this simply can’t operate on public roads or has so be disabled and air tank empty. There isn’t really anything comparable on CT from a public safety perspective. Not even close.

AnonymousLampoon 8 points (1 child)

Unfortunately, from what I understand, they already have commercial pricing and branding. It's called the "SpaceX Thruster Upgrade Package" and it's $690,000 USD

I can also, guarantee that this will not see any sort of preventative regulatory oversight to keep this jumping car off the road until this administration is gone. Hopefully the midterms euthanize their mandate and we can finally go back go a little bit of normalcy around here.

AnybodyWannaPeanus 7 points

Yeah, because any time Elon uses ā€œ69ā€ or ā€œ420ā€, he’s being completely serious. 690k for what amounts to a parlor trick will cement this into the hall of automotive oddities. There won’t be more than a handful produced if any are actually sold. That will only make it harder to make them street legal.

States can also exercise discretion, just like they have with those little Kei pickup trucks.

All this amounts to is a PT Barnum style marketing stunt to get people talking about Tesla. And as you can see, it worked. Whatever they invested to do this, is dwarfed by the amount of discussion/attention this got. The usefulness of the feature ends there.

Also, calling this a ā€œflying carā€ makes about as much sense as calling the General Lee a flying car.

Those of us who have worked in computer networking have heard of RFC 1925, which sums this up nicely:

ā€œWith sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them as they fly overhead.ā€

It’s just the most literal example I’ve ever seen to decribe this dumb assed stunt.

ALTH0X 68 points (1 child)

Especially the kind of people who buy cybertrucks

DragApprehensive336 25 points (1 child)

They're called Klanborghinis now.

ScienceGuy6 17 points (2 children)

This is it. Firstly, the average American will never be able to afford this. The people that could afford this will be able to afford any damage they inflict with it. Are they going to try and jump over traffic? What reason is really behind the building of this? It would be a great getaway car after a crime. But it has no place on American highways.
Now, it wouldn’t be out of place on a less populated planet, say Mars? Or even the moon? I don’t think the rich asshole ever stated what the use of this car would be. All I know is that it can ā€œsuck the chrome off of a bumperā€, or ā€œsuck a bowling ball through a garden hoseā€, because his humor never developed past the fifth grade.

MAGAHATESTHEUSA 5 points (1 child)

Tbf more rich people will die using this car.

Tsar-A-Lago 12 points

However, it wouldn't be a problem for long because the SpaceX components it's made of will cause it to spontaneously explode in your driveway.

Cars flinging around on the ground with ridiculously compressed gases, what could possibly go wrong?

Acceptable_Aside_568 40 points (6 children)

Also - this one of the dumbest inventions of this century. Alongside Cybertruck.

They could have spent the time making better batteries or improving build quality. Instead they went full speed into useless gimmicks.

squirrelems 7 points (1 child)

I don't understand why they made it look so dumb. Pretty much any futuristic car from...anything...looks cooler than the cybertruck.

Acceptable_Aside_568 9 points (1 child)

I think AOC migh have explained that one quite well.

LesbeGoddess 4 points

Don’t worry. It’s a concept car that will never be released for production and is purely cheesy advertisement to pump that shit stock that is overvalued by 10x

Careless-Concert-ape 4 points (1 child)

tired_fella 5 points (1 child)

there's not really an invention here. RCS has been in use long before SpaceX was found, in rockets, missiles and interceptor vehicles.

daGroundhog 4 points (1 child)

Dumbest inventions? Hyperloop wants in on the chat....

burninmedia 30 points (1 child)

SpaceX and Tesla engineers built that shit while this guy runs around trying to figure out how to rig elections. People are so stupid, which is why they want to defund education, I mean have.

witsnuitneusbeer 7 points

Alexfan_collector163 125 points * (edited 2h ago) (3 children)

Hilariously that didn't disprove our point though. Elon took the credit instead of the engineers behind it. The company should've been named Edison instead of Tesla.

Burt_Macklin___ 37 points (3 children)

I mean, it's not even really a great feet of engineering. The car isn't drivable. It's an empty shell. A reinforced steel grid with a cheap car skin on top. It's not and never will be a product, it's just an investment scam

Emotional_Shower_938 16 points (1 child)

To be fair, its also a distraction from the doc that i believe comes out this weekend.

tradesman46 337 points (3 children)

Elon doesn't create anything. The liberals working in his companies do.

catwhowalksbyhimself 94 points (2 children)

Also, there's nothing that impressive about a jumping stunt car. There is no practical use of it, and if it's not already illegal for road use, it should be. It's goof for promotional stunts and professional daredevils only.

Thatsockmonkey 37 points (2 children)

I mean, isn’t that just a shell that he jumped? It was pretty much just a stunt drone, correct? There’s nothing about it except for the shape.

lothartheunkind 23 points (1 child)

Absolutely a shell RC. Probably had most of its batteries removed as well. If this was anything more than a publicity stunt, they would have shown the interior and given a tour of the build. We would have seen a driver get out of the car, too. And this will never see a roadway with a dozen high pressure canisters stashed away in all the crash impact zones.

gchypedchick 8 points

I told my husband it was basically a magic show. It’s all an illusion.

Gorillasofgallifrey 14 points (5 children)

Do liberals still work in his companies? I would have thought a lot of them would have quit. (Not saying this to defend Elon. He sucks).

gr1mmcr33p3r 19 points (1 child)

Yes, and they hate it…… but even his idiocy can’t hinder their love of innovation. I tend to think of it as a Werner Von Braun situation, take the $ to try and better the world no matter who’s handing it out. While it’s morally questionable, I can’t argue with that attitude.

Source: two personal liberal acquaintances who are engineers for the company lol.

Also, even teslas engineers hate the cyber truck and apparently it’s the only project Elon demanded he be in on the engineering/design and completely wrote off every issue they brought up

Vyntarus 32 points (1 child)

He makes his money by defrauding investors, not delivering the products he claims will totally exist "some time next year".

DW171 20 points

Approx 1.5 million Tesla customers paid for autonomous self-driving mode, and are still waiting for it. It was promised back in 2014. That say's it all.

Interesting and possibly related: These kind of claims influenced the whole car industry to "catch up." I drove my father's mint 2015 Japanese luxury sedan on a road trip last week, and the automated "safety" features are far from safe. Think unexpectedly hammering on the brakes at 85 mph because someone passed me. My theory is they were trying to launch features that were far from market-ready, because of Tesla's claims.

Mrfrundles86 12 points (2 children)

Grape_Pedialyte 10 points

Jobs was a massive dick and terrible person but he was a transcendent hype man (as in actually good at it, not a mumbling unsocialized man child like Elon) and was actually in on the ground floor as a co-founder of Apple.

As awful as he was, Musk still doesn't stack up to him at all.

klako8196 134 points (8 children)

Elon is unintelligent enough to think that flying cars are a good idea when most people either suck at driving normally or can barely afford gas for a regular car, let alone a flying car that would need way more energy to work.

Murky-Course6648 78 points (5 children)

This is not a flying car, this is advertisement trick. This is purely about the attention, that all these post about it gathers. This is marketing.

Why do people think this is an actual flying car?

Because your average Musk fanboy is as big an idiot as he is.

Dull-Culture-1523 14 points (2 children)

My issue is with Musk taking credit for it and pretending like the future is now, when the future is very clearly in the future.

How messed up will the average non-astronaut feel after a maneuver like that? Too nauseous to carry on driving right away I’m sure.

Do people actually think that Elon is designing this shit?

BarnabasShrexx 6 points (1 child)

Jfc people still think elon sits down and does engineer stuff?

Dude has a bachelors degree, fuck all the way off

Damaging_Thrust_219 6 points * (edited 3h ago) (1 child)
  • He absolutely wasn't involved in any of the hard engineering
  • He definitely was involved in planning that demonstration
  • The demonstration is rather pointless - that version of the car will never be up for purchase

If anything that show proves her point.

frenchfreer 6 points

Has anyone that Elon musk is not paying ever said he’s intelligent? It seems like the only people who call him smart rely on Musk for a paycheck, while every legitimate scientist and engineer not on his payroll think he’s a complete moron.

I paid $800 for my phone so that means I invented my phone.

CONSIDER THE SCIENCE BEHIND THIS.

If you have taken physics or you are science-oriented, you'll realize that this is very likely a sham. I'm not 100% certain, but if you think about the physics, what is being suggested is impossible.

Think about the enormous amount of energy required to keep this car afloat if it's based on propellant. Consider how Harrier Jump jets spend so much fuel to do something similar for a few seconds.

The only way to accomplish this practically would be to rely on a technology that counteracts gravitational forces without expending energy. The aliens that have been spotted sporadically likely use such a technology. But we are nowhere near that level of technology yet. [Edit - deleted: Our scientists still don't know where gravity comes from.]

100%. I am confident that the car that did a 0-60 test is not the same car that flew. That car I’m certain was just a shell with thrusters - A tiny motor and a tiny battery. It is all smoke and mirrors.

But even if it is 100% real, we will never see a single car on the road do any of this. The only thing you might see is the thrust 0-60 on a track. And if we see that, you will only see it once or twice a day. It would take way too much time and electrons to pressurize the car to consistently do this during a full lap on a track. Back to physics…it just isn’t practical.

The show was cute but not grounded in anything real.

With all this said, he tricked us in 2017 about the roadster. Odds are, he is just tricking us again. Plus, the new car does not look nearly as good as the 2017 roadster.

As fun as this was to watch, it is all meh. I guarantee that the Mission S will be a far superior driver’s car.

If what you said above is true, I think it's outright fraud. I don't know if there is a law against this type of fraud. It's kinda' similar to how game shows were once rigged but are now illegal. It gives a false impression that deceives the public. Nobody directly gets hurt but I think it does long-term damage as people start believing in nonsense. In this case, people would invest in Tesla stock based on the false assumptions.

With all this said, he tricked us in 2017 about the roadster.

If what you said is true, I'm wondering why the SEC didn't get involved as it would affect investors' belief about the company.

Laws? In the US? For a political doner??

ConsiderationTrue477 • points (1 child)

It's a Mythbusters build. Like seriously it's exactly like something Mythbusters would do to prove that a car could technically fly in a Back of the Future II themed episode. There is zero practical value in this.

The Japanese have a word for Elon's middle-school style thinking.

Strict-Cup-4775 4 points (1 child)

Well, don’t keep us in suspense

Elon, like a little kid: "CAN WE PUT THE COLD JETS WE'VE USED IN SPACEX ON A TESLA AND MAKE IT FLY? I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT I WANT IT NOW!

Engineers: Well... Shit. Fine.

factoid_ 4 points (1 child)

They actually think HE built the thing?

This thing that they’ll probably make about 5 of ever? Ā It’s a production stunt. Ā A fun one, I’ll admit. Ā But just a stunt.

funkymunkPDX 5 points (1 child)

You probably don't want to see wanna see what NASA was doing with landers in the 70's.

That's how rovers landed on Mars.

LoganWanderingWolf00 6 points (1 child)

Elon is a moron, he doesn't invent ANYTHING, he just buys shit and claims all the credit, this car is a deathtrap...

FoxMan1Dva3 4 points (1 child)

If you had a billion, you could also do what he does. He grabs the best scientists in this area and they do it.

You think Elon did this?

IronSavage3 5 points

Acting like Elon is literally in the lab inventing all this shit is a mental illness.

MaxAdolphus 5 points (1 child)

Musk paid a bunch of engineers to do this as a publicity stunt. Musk did not build that car, and couldn’t build that car if locked in a room for 10 years.

MyBurnerAccount1977 3 points (1 child)

How about in a cave with a box full of scraps? Yeah, probably not that either.

justified_egg 5 points

There is no way that roadster wasn't a hollowed out prototype that barely cut on for this demo. I wouldn't hold your breath on this ever hitting production.

And that's without mentioning that Elon didn't design this shit, either way. Like always, he's eager to take credit for what his engineers came up with.

QueenRotidder 5 points

LMAOOOO as if he had fuck all to do with actually developing the tech that went into this šŸ˜‚ these people probably also think he invented the Tesla

Jayce86 5 points * (edited 2h ago)

Elon’s entire contribution to this vehicle; ā€œPut rockets on that car!ā€

That’s it, nothing else.

Indicus124 6 points

I feel sorry for the engineers that are forever ignored as people pretend that Elon designed the car and when they are mentioned people go "But who hired the engineers dumb liberal knowing who to hire is just as important."

TheW00ly 4 points (1 child)

Because Elon Musk definitely invented all of the things he put his name on.Ever heard of Tom Mueller? No? Me neither before I looked up who actually designed the Falcon rocket.

Brummer65 6 points

Flying cars are stupid. They are rich person's fantasy

Bendlerp 10 points (1 child)

Elon Musk, the modern Thomas Edison.

Before anyone downvotes, read about the actual inventors of the lightbulb and pretty much everything else he "invented" tldr he bought out patents.

Curious_Front_1100 3 points

This one car that does too much.
Like, where would this car be allowed to do this? Out in the middle of nowhere?

Future_Armadillo6410 4 points

How much do these bots cost? That car thing is so lame even if a bunch of bot posts say it's not.

Background-Bee1271 4 points

He can't even play video games for himself and we are supposed to believe he could create a flying car. The only thing he has is money and an embarrassment kink.

Skwaasher 4 points (1 child)

"Financing" a project is not the same as "creating" a project. Elon is the "money man"; there are dozens of other much more intelligent individuals that are doing the inventing/creating of these projects. He just "buys" their silence.

Competitive-Bee-3250 4 points (1 child)

Its truly remarkable that he managed to single-handedly design and build a fully functional rocket car while also being a top10 path of exile player and also coding X all by himself and also looking after all 13 of his kids and also personally designing and building all the rockets made by SpaceX

spicygumball 5 points

Anyone can strap 12 strong fire extinguishers to a car and do the same thing.

It's not the same as flying nor will it be practical to use.

Vanity project wasting money.

Shinagami091 5 points (1 child)

Do people think he designed and engineered it himself?

TarheelFr06 3 points (1 child)

This doesn’t make Elon smart. It makes him able to pay people who are. Also, this car can’t fly, it can land safely from falling. It’s an interesting curiosity but not overly useful.

That ā€œdemoā€ is proving AOC’s point but it’s probably gonna be a few years, if ever, for some people to realize that

sambucuscanadensis 5 points

Also people are confusing investing with developing. Guy buys shit, he doesn’t develop anything himself

Ill-Dependent2976 4 points

The only people stupider than Elon Musk are his nazi fanboys impressed by the drone with the fire extinguishers.

No-Algae-7437 3 points

Elon didn't design it, build it, or program it, he just approves payment for other people to make an expensive toy to juice Tesla stock so it doesn't lose value because he's overleveraged against the stock collateral. This little trick will never see the light of day in production.

irascible_Clown 4 points

Elon Musk ≅ Thomas Edison

erinato 5 points

Just because he's got money to fund his random ideas doesn't make you a genius... The people he's paying are. There's a BIG difference.

Wasp4631 4 points

First Elon didn't do anything, his engineers did

Second we have had flying cars for decades, they're called helocopters and there's a reson we don't let random people use those

Familiar-Throat-670 4 points

Musk has NEVER DESIGNED anything, only funded or cashed in early

-neverknowsbest_ • points

Yeah people feel so smart about saying this, but it's not like he's the one who sat there and designed it

Old-Natural-852 7 points (1 child)

More proof of the "everyone is 12" theory. Ā Who...finds this impressive? Ā What adult asked for this? Ā Real world has become a plot if a Dexter's Lab episode.

Ok-Development5523 5 points (1 child)

Tfw you buy into billionaires propaganda...

1: Elon didnt build it

2: There was NO DRIVER, and therefore, this is NOT A REAL CAR, he's a con man selling yet ANOTHER PIPE DREAM!!!

ataraxia_777 5 points (1 child)

That makes me trust him even less, somehow.

China is wrecking shop and they're doing it by building mostly cheap, practical, boring cars. And they don't need their products barrel rolling to prove it.

If you need a stunt to distract your audience, then it just shows how much of a conman you are.
